Roster 17/18: Darren Stattersfield
ULTIMATE WINDOWS-sponsored Billingham Stars are delighted to welcome a young 'old' face back to the Forum this evening as talented young defenceman Darren Stattersfield returns after over four years away from his home town.
Just 17 years of age, Darren is already a much-travelled hockey player! Leaving the Stars set-up for the Okanagan Hockey Academy in Swindon during the 2012-2013 season was Darren's first career move, followed by a stint in Canada where Darren iced for the Coldwater Falcons for the 2015-2016 season. Darren started last season still in Canada, but returned to the UK midway through the year when he was snapped up by Solway Sharks. Darren also travelled to Korea to represent Great Britain Under-18s at the World Junior Championships (Division 2A) where the team finished fifth.

Stattersfield Q&A on signing...
Q. Welcome back to Billingham Darren! How does it feel to be back in the North East?
"Yeah it feels great to be back in the North East with the family and playing back for my hometown club, it will be a proud moment for me and the family pulling on the red shirt."
Q. Did you enjoy your time with the Sharks?
"I can't thank the Sharks and Martin Grubb enough for having the faith in me as a young player. I had a great time all the players and the fans made me feel welcome from the start, a great club."
Q. You were in Canada for a few years – what do you feel you learned while you were there?
"Canada was a great experience - I enjoyed two seasons, met some great people and learned so much, going from a 16 to a 42 game season was the big change, the competition level was much higher which pushed me on. You can't get away with anything less than 100%."
Q. How would you describe yourself to anyone who hasn’t seen you play?
"I am a hard working, smooth skating defenceman with an eye for goal, I love getting stuck in and competing, first and foremost a team player."
Q. The League is completely new to everyone this season – what are you looking forward to the most? Any teams that you are particularly looking forward to facing?
"To be honest I am looking forward to the amount of games and the level of competition and to test myself against the best teams in the league. I am learning all the time and this is a great opportunity for me."
Q. Do you have any personal goals for this season and do you think the Stars can compete?
"The only goal I have for the season is how much I can provide to help the team win. Anything else is a bonus and yeah without question I think we can compete I just don't expect it to be easy."
Stars Media Team insiders on Stattersfield...
"Rangey, young, stay-at-home defenceman who was part of the treble-winning Solway Sharks after a year across the pond. A GB U18 with good upside and the chance to grow into a valuable piece for the Stars."
"A no-nonsense defenceman who isn't afraid to do the dirty work in front of net. His time in North America has improved his game and he enjoyed success with Solway in the second half of last season. After several years away from home, with Okanagan, time in Canada and Solway, Darren returns home to Billingham to add steel to the Stars blueline."
"Looking forward to seeing Darren continue his development in this improved League environment. Playing in a formidable Solway side last season clearly didn't faze him and can only have helped his cause."
