Ultimate Windows sponsored Billingham Stars

ULTIMATE WINDOWS-sponsored Billingham Stars are delighted to welcome a brand-new face to their 2019-2020 squad this evening as netminder Mark Turnbull departs Whitley Warriors to pull on a Billingham jersey.

24-year-old Turnbull joins the Stars after almost an entire career spent on Tyneside, save a short stint in Canada. Check out his stats by clicking here.

Turnbull will be challenging his fellow goaltenders for the starting position, providing some healthy competition as the new-look netminder line-up looks to give the new coaches the luxury of a difficult choice to make.

After being almost totally a ‘one club man’ to this point, we wanted to find out more about Turnbull and his motivations for making the switch to Teesside:

Apart from a spell in Canada you’ve spent your entire career with our local rivals – what made you want to move, and why did you choose the Stars?

"I’ve played at Whitley since I was 8 so I haven’t really had the chance to explore other options. I’ve always been impressed with Billingham as a whole and believe this will be a great opportunity."

The Stars’ netminders all have huge skates to fill with the retirement of James Flavell – are you looking forward to the challenge?

"Flav was a great goalie and has set the bar very high. However, the other goalies at the club are more than capable of doing the same job this season. There’s going to be a lot of competition for places in the team but I am excited for the challenge."

What do you hope to achieve this season?

"My aim is to be consistent throughout the season and help the club win some silverware. The EPL teams are no longer involved so I believe finishing top is a realistic and achievable goal."

Lastly… are you looking forward to facing your ‘home’ team when we take on the Warriors?

"It’ll definitely be a strange one. The Warriors are going to have a strong team again this season and I think it could be quite competitive between us and them. I am looking forward to it."

Welcome to the Stars, Mark – we’re sure the fans will give you a warm welcome come September!

Turnbull’s shirt number will be revealed at a later date.

The Stars will be making more player announcements in the coming days and weeks, as well as news about our Juniors.
